Thursday, March 14, 2013
This needs to be shared with me by Wednesday, March 6. Also post the answers on your Blogger.
How did you decide on your Big Idea?
I thought coming of age was something I could relate to as well as other people, and the theme typically produces good, entertaining movies.
How did you decide on a way to show that Big Idea through video?
By doing a narrative/epic type movie showing an adventure flashback that a man walking among his old memories reconciles.
What video concepts did you decide not to do? Why?
I had the idea to do a coming of age movie right away I did not really develop any other Big Ideas.
Do you feel you effectively talked about your Big Idea with your video? Why or why not?
For the most part. I think I could have emphasized the points I wanted to show a little better, for example I wanted to show how coming of age involves sacrificing what you want sometimes. I also wanted to show how adventures are typically the strongest memories you have when you think back to what you have learned from and what makes you who you are today.
What was the best part of this process (brainstorming, writing, planning, shooting, editing, etc?) Why was it the best for you?
I enjoyed the writing and editing of this movie the most. I enjoyed the writing because I could pretty much write whatever story I wanted without constraints and get excited about what my movie looked like on paper. Editing was fun too because of how bad the acting was in the movie and the need for all artificial sound it was quite the challenge.
What was the best part of choosing your own Big Idea as opposed to me setting one for you? The worst part?
It makes you much more interested to create the video and also makes it more personal in the sense of the idea of the movie and in the style and format. And obviously, the worst part of choosing your own idea was the difficulty in deciding on what to do since there are so many routes you can take.
Propose one additional Big Idea video idea that you could accomplish by March 14. I want very specific details: what, who, why, how, when, where.
My new idea for a BIG IDEA 2 is to do an animation about greed/the american dream/whatever you want it to be. Usually, I don't lean towards serious movies or ideas, so this will be new. However, I plan to make it a lighter, simple video on the surface with a deeper meaning as you dig, since this is more towards my style and honestly I can't stand overly serious high school films. I will only have to use myself, so that will be helpful since the biggest problem that occurred with my last video was getting actors. It will be a single scene movie of two people, one young and one old, at a bus stop where the younger really wants to see what the old man is reading. Then, the old man throws the paper away and walks off and the younger guy pulls it out of the trash to read. He opens it and realizes that it is blank, and he gets frustrated and throws it away as well (and leaves). As an foreshadowing kind of conclusion, there will be another guy who walks into he shot and find the paper in the trash, and pulls it out and the movie ends as the audience can infer the cycle continues as it does with greed and the american dream.

intervention writing
-Intervention is interrupting everyday life with something out of the ordinary. For instance, the "Wonder"
sign that Mr. Aumiller found had made him stop and ask "why is this here" and "what does this mean".
-The purpose was to think about ways to intervene into someone's daily routine. Also, one of the
challenges was to not make it a prank, but rather an uplifting intervention.
-With my can opener drive intervention I wanted to bring up a pretty obvious, sensible idea that gets
overlooked when people hold can drives. I mean how do people really open all those cans!? I was
interested to see what kind of reaction it would get and if anyone would actually donate any.
-I picked my location (the school) because it is a common place where they hold can drives so it made
sense to hold a can opener drive here. Also, I thought it would be a funny place to see how people were
shocked or disgusted by the idea.
-improv everywhere for their thinking of big, unusual things. The pot hole gardener for making life out of
dead places (the school), and can drives for prompting the need for can openers.
Artist statement:

Artist statement:
Have you ever been a part of a can drive or seen one? Ever wondered how all of those cans get opened? Well for me it was a logical and troubling question that I needed to put an end to. Therefore at Hilliard Davidson, I started a can opener drive.
I set up a basic box with a word document reading “can opener drive--help open cans from can drives” in the hallway outside the office to see what kind of result I would get. After a day, I went to check on it and it was shoved inside of the ‘Used Sporting Goods’ donation box. I went to put it in a more highly populated area, so I took it to the blood drive table. Unfortunatly, I started this project pretty late and did not collect any can openers.
Even though no can openers were collected, I think the point of the project was reached. I think that people seeing the can opener drive made them stop and think about how their really is a lack of can openers to supplement can drives, and for those few seconds their daily life was intervened with. I enjoyed doing this project because it was pretty open in terms of what you could do, but I think it also affected people other than myself so all in all, this was a fun and effective project.

Corgan Rolling stone
Billy Corgan rolling stone article
1) It begins by the author writing that Billy is very depressed despite his past music success and has recently contemplated suicide.
2) The author used the quote from Billy that in the morning he has a choice of "Go eat breakfast, or go kill yourself." to show his depression.
3) He is trying to say he is a depressed person even though he has had great music success, and that his new music has not had good success.
4) The author does not write himself into the article, I do not think it would have been necessary to do so.
5) Definitely opinionated; the author clearly uses some harsh language against Corgan and highlights his depression and whining throughout the article.

Protagonist vs. Antagonist Brainstorm Writing
Copy and paste this onto your blog. (command C, command V)
You will write details about six characters; three antagonists, three protagonists.
Begin with one character, a protagonist. Write down their name. Write their current desires and motivations in life. Write down their childhood/backstory. These are the most important pieces.
Now write down their physical description, physical quirks, personality flaws. This is secondary to the motivation and backstory. It’s the icing on the cake, and it’s still important.
Now write that character’s nemesis using the exact same process (desires, backstory, physical ing onionsand personality quirks, etc). Think about why and how they are blocking the protagonist from achieving their goal. Is it malicious? Accidental?
Repeat this with two other sets of characters.
NOTE: You do not have to use all or any of these characters for your video if you don’t want to. It is an exercise to get you thinking about character building. On the other hand, this may trigger some brilliant thought that leads to a wonderful video project. You won’t know unless you put your heart and head into it.
Protagonist #1:
Smitty McGroin: Pete is a 57 year old man who lives in a storage shed by the rec. center. Every Tuesday, the city has a board meeting and he shows up thinking he is the president. He has lived in the same small town of Kickenwing his whole life, and now they face a serious rabbies problem. He has many good ideas for the town but nobody listens to him because he doesn’t own land and has a lisp. Smitty’s only goal is to help out his home town.
Antagonist #1:
Johnny Pistachio: Johnny is a respected member of the city board and is the real president. However, he has terrible ideas and realizes Smitty’s ideas are great. Not wanting to get replaced by Smitty, he sets out to sabotage him by infesting Smitty’s shed with fruit flies, giving rabbies to the animals in Smitty’s area and putting a “kick me” sign on Smitty’s back at the board meeting.
Protagonist #2:
Hernandez Fiero: 32 year old Fiero has a passion to make videos of himself cooking. However, his cat keeps getting in the shot and becoming the center of attention in all his videos, ruining his desire to show his viewers his food. Fiero is the best chef in the world, however no one can learn about this because of his cat, which keeps him from TV shows, owning restaurants, and other things top chefs do. Why would he not just cook somewhere his cat is not? Because he has cooked in the same kitchen his whole life.
Antagonist #2:
Hernandez Fiero: Even though it may appear his cat is the antagonist in this story, Fiero is in a battle with himself for if he wants to take the risk of leaving his loyalty to his kitchen for making the big time. At the verge of when he is about to take his talents to the world, his cat burns itself on the stove, and Fiero remembers his original love for cooking with his cat, and decides to stay cooking in his kitchen.
Protagonist: #3:
Oliver the Pirate: Oliver has been raised by pirates his whole life, however he has always been the worst pirate. His community decides to send him away to sea, and on the last night he overhears the pirates saying they will take over the island of Jiujima in 2 weeks. Oliver has no idea what this island is, however when they cast him out to see he ends up landing on the island Jiujima. As he becomes friends with the local people of jiujima, Oliver decides to try and defend his new island of family, despite his troubles as a pirate.
Antagonist #3:
Captain Richard the Pirate: Richard has hated Oliver since they were young pirates and is the top dog of pirates. His family has always led their group of pirates because of how aggressive and racist they are. When Richard grows up, he is the one who plans to attack the island of Jiujima.
